Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality." Artists painted (occasionally disturbing) illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.
In celebration of Halloween, we have compiled some of the horrifying images in history. We warn you, some of these images are NSFW. They are outstandingly creepy, yet interesting.

Psychedelic and Vintage Animations by Richard Balzer
Based in New York, artist Richard Balzer’s obsession with praxinoscopes, camera obscuras, anamorphic mirrors, zoetropes and other optical mechanisms is manifested in his animated work on his Tumblr blog. The psychedelic and whimsical illustrations possess a vintage sensibility, which is uniquely composed with the use of a spinning disc. The phenakistoscopes (one fo these first devices used to developed animated figures to create the illusion of motion) reveal morbid and antique designs, which mirror a mid 19th-century European fashion.
During his stay in a French asylum after his ear had been mutilated, Vincent van Gogh created some of his best work, which includes ’Starry Night.’ Although we have been admiring ‘Starry Night’ for 125 years, we have recently discovered a scientific finding, which is lightyears ahead of its time.
